Q: Does my job require a permit? A: More than likely your job will require a permit, but not necessarily. Work requiring electrical, plumbing, structural changes, will require a New Jersey licensed contractor to secure a permit and perform the work. However, under New Jersey Remodelers Law some work such as direct kitchen replacement will not require a permit. After all, the township is there to protect you.
Q: Will I need a permits for my patio? A: Not in all townships; however there is a movement to require a building permit for patios as well a zoning permit for impermeable ground calculations, so ask your municipality’s building department to be safe. Q: Do I need a permit for Low Voltage Lighting? A: Not all townships require an electrical permit for low voltage lighting; however some do, so check with your municipal building department. All work must be installed in compliance with the NEC or National Electric Code guideline, and if a permit is required it will be secured by a New Jersey licensed contractor and work overseen by the contractor.
